The Azores are one of Portugal’s two autonomous regions, comprising nine islands divided into three groups: the Western Group (São Miguel and Santa Maria), the Central Group (Terceira, Pico, Faial, São Jorge, and Graciosa), and the Eastern Group (Flores and Corvo). These islands stretch over 600 kilometers across the North Atlantic Ocean, located 1,360 kilometers from mainland Portugal, 1,507 kilometers from Morocco, and 1,925 kilometers from Canada.

The name “Azores” originates from a 14th-century tale of arriving sailors. Mistaking the abundant local birds for buzzards (which were then called “azores”), they named the islands accordingly. It was later discovered the birds were actually kites, but the name “Azores” endured.

The climate here is consistently mild and temperate. Daytime temperatures typically range from 16 to 25 ºC, depending on the season, and winter temperatures rarely fall below 10 ºC.

Each island boasts distinct cultural nuances, including dialects, cuisine, and traditions. This diversity stems from the islands’ varied settlers and the unique agricultural products each island cultivates.

São Miguel, the largest island, spans approximately 759 square kilometers (about 64 kilometers long and 12 kilometers wide) and is home to around 150,000 residents. It features pristine lakes that provide potable water, expansive forests, diverse ecosystems and biodiversity, and significant secondary volcanic activity, creating numerous thermal bath areas.

For those who prefer spontaneous travel, worry not! We offer a wide array of options, from bicycle rentals to guided tours, allowing you to explore this beautiful island with the expertise of our local guides from Flow Tours, who are part of our team.
